How does God Communicate with Us?
Introduction:
You must have thought at some point in your life, “Why doesn’t God show himself to us?” Why can’t we talk to Him? How does God communicate with us? Just like you, I too searched for the answer to this question by reading many religious books and the autobiographies and interviews of many saints.
However, I found a satisfying answer when I came across Paramahansa Yogananda’s books “The Autobiography of a Yogi” and “How you can talk with God“.
Paramahansa Yogananda is regarded as one of the most influential spiritual leaders of our time. He is often referred to as the “father of Yoga in the West”.
Yogananda was born in India and came to the US in 1920 and devoted more than 30 years to teaching the ancient science of meditation techniques and promoting the art of balanced spiritual living. He was also the founder of the Self-realization Fellowship.
Today, I will attempt to convey to you in my own words what Paramahansa Yogananda explained in his book about how God communicates with us. I am also going to share with you the conversation he had with God, which will leave you amazed.
How does God Communicate with Us?
According to Yogananda, talking to God is a reality, not a fictional tale. Thousands of saints in India continue to meditate all the time, maintaining a connection with the Divine. From the Mountain Kailash to the Himalayan region, you can find evidence of these saints and ascetics on the internet from time to time. But they never interfere in our social structure, as it would create obstacles in God’s creation.
And the point is that this conversation with God isn’t just a one-way prayer. It’s a two-way conversation. It means that you are not only praying, but God also answers all your questions. Now, in this situation, you may be asking yourself, “Why every person cannot have a conversation with God? Why do people feel so disconnected from God?”
Yogananda explains some reasons for this.
1) Doubt:
The first reason is our doubt. Friends, look deep into your hearts and ask yourself, do you truly believe that you are capable of communicating with God? If so, is it possible? If not, you are still in doubt today.
Friends, this doubt is your biggest obstacle. Doubt is that you have yet to discover the depth of your love and devotion to God within yourself. In this context, the definition of “devotion” is “selfless love for God”.
Yogananda says that it is generally believed that people mostly pray to God from their minds and are unable to pray with the depth and intensity of the heart. As a result, these prayers often fall on deaf ears.
Yogananda believes that we should communicate with the Supreme Being with a sense of closeness, just like we talk to our parents. When we do this, even God becomes compelled to accept our prayers.
Therefore, you must have absolute faith that sooner or later he will answer your prayers. Only your faith can remove your doubts.
2) Image:
The second reason that Yogananda mentioned is the “image of God”. In other words, we must have a clear picture of God in our minds. Otherwise, no clear answer can be obtained.
This means that we must have some form or image of God in our mind that we want to see or feel. The form in which we worship God would be the same form in which God will communicate with us. Whether it is the God of Moses or the God of Jesus, or the form of Ram, Krishna, Shiva, or Buddha, or any other form that you desire. If you believe that God is in the formless, then you will experience God in that formless form, that is the form of Light.
The first thing you need to know is that God is one, no matter how many religions there are in the world. Your love for God is based on your intellect and your heart.
3) Strong Desire:
In the words of Yogananda, you must have a strong desire to attain God within you. Simply put, you should firmly decide that God will speak to you and you should not have any doubts about it.
After that, no matter how long it takes, one day you will get the answers to all your questions. That’s why people who want to experience God directly practice meditation. It helps their mind to stay focused and dedicated to their goal.
Yogananda’s direct experience with God
I will now share with you in Yogananda’s own words about his direct experience with God.
He said, “The first time I heard God’s voice was when I was just a little kid. I was on the terrace one morning, thinking about what was behind the darkness of closed eyes. This curious thought came to my mind very strongly. At that moment, I saw an infinite ray of light in my inner vision. It started to come to me like a divine picture of meditating saints sitting in the caves of Himalayan mountains.”
I asked in a high-pitched voice, “Who are you”.
They replied, “We are yogis from the Himalayas.”
The response of the divine souls was magical.
It made my heart sing. The divine sight instantly faded, but the silver light continued to grow and spread out in a circular shape.
I asked, “What is this amazing silver light?”
The answer came, “I am God. I am Light.”
That sound was like the shaking of clouds. My mother and elder sister Roma were sitting next to me when I had my first experience. They heard this divine voice too. I was so moved by God’s answer that I decided to search for him until I became completely united with Him.
How can we communicate with God?
Yogananda writes in his book that most people believe that there is only darkness behind closed eyes. But as your spiritual awakening journey progresses and your attention is focused on the divine eye that is in the center of your forehead, your inner vision, or third eye, will open up.
Then you will see a world of many beautiful lights.
Just as I had witnessed the divine saints of the Himalayas, you too will have similar experiences. And if your focus is fixed on God, you will also hear the voice of God.
God expects selfless love from you.
The way to experience a direct connection with God is not easy.
In the beginning, God tests you, so it is extremely difficult.
Because God wants to make sure that you only desire him and not any other materialistic thing.
He won’t talk to you until you convince him that there is no hidden desire in your heart.
But if you have a desire to only receive gifts from God in your heart, then why would he manifest in front of you?
God expects selfless love from you.
Final Words:
In his book, Yogananda further explains that we humans are the spark of that ultimate energy, and our desire for happiness can never be satisfied by material things. You can never truly be satisfied with any material thing in the world.
But if you break the silence of God once with your love and determination, you will be able to speak to God not only once but many times.
In Yogananda’s book, you will find many descriptions of direct encounters with God.
If we can awaken selfless love, devotion, and faith in God in our hearts, then we too can experience God like Yogananda.
